Seen above is my design for the 10th annual “Plaktivat” design competition in Slovenia organized by the Divja Misel Institute for Nonprofit Communication. Each year a different theme is explored, and the theme this particular year was the promotion of book reading in our increasingly screen-based culture. I created an illustration of an ascending figure with book pages for wings. The Slovene type seen roughly translates to “Let books sweep you away.” The copy and graphics on the lower half of the design were rotated to a 45 degree angle to give the poster a retro early-20th century Constructivist look. Color-wise, the goal was for the piece to feel friendly, soothing, and aspirational, so a blue/teal gradient with a contrasting sun yellow were used.
